As explained before by a One Piece critic/fan, the way Oda writes One Piece is reminiscent of "Adventure novels" or ancient "Romance". Which deal with the strange, exciting and epic adventures of heroic characters set in a remote time and place and usually featuring idealism, virtue, mystery, and so on. Oda himself displayed knowledge of this concept as One Piece first chapter was entitled "Romance Dawn", and easily lampshapes it through Montblanc Cricket and how that character used the term "Romance"
In this kind of setting, a well-written relationship doesn't depend on the overused and clearly clichéd conceptions of "Romance" promoted by most media. Which comes down to giving flowers, corny one-liners, and/or exaggerated interest in sex. None of these elem
